Why Spiritual Gifts Matter

On Earth as it is in Heaven: Why Spiritual Gifts Matter
Welcome to our new sermon series “On Earth as it is in Heaven” a three-part sermon series on spiritual gifts. We’re diving into what spiritual gifts are, why they matter, and how you can walk in the power God has placed inside you.

This isn’t just another teaching series—it’s a call to action. Our goals are simple:

  • That every believer knows their spiritual gifts
  • That faith and revelation are stirred to use them
  • That we see testimonies of “Your Kingdom Come” in everyday life
  • That no one in church remains a spectator

Why Spiritual Gifts Matter
1. You Already Have One
1 Corinthians 12:11 says, “All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.”

If you’re a Christian, you’ve already been given a spiritual gift. Not one day, not maybe—right now. Every believer has something specific that the Holy Spirit has empowered them to do for the good of the church and the glory of God.

The Bible lists various gifts—wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation (1 Corinthians 12). Romans 12 adds gifts like serving, teaching, encouragement, generosity, leadership, and mercy.

There are even less-talked-about gifts, like craftsmanship or hospitality. Some believe celibacy (Matthew 19:10-12) is also a spiritual gift. The point is: your gift is unique, but its source is the same—the Spirit of God.

2. They’re Given for the Common Good
Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:7, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”

Spiritual gifts aren’t just personal perks—they’re tools for building the church, testifying to a living God, and bringing heaven to earth. As Acts 1:8 reminds us, “You will receive power… and you will be my witnesses.”

When you operate in your gift, you reveal God’s power to the world around you.

3. They Reflect God’s Character
Different gifts reveal different aspects of who God is. Not every situation calls for the same gift—and not every believer is gifted the same way.

The key is knowing when and how to use your gift. Misapplying the wrong one in the wrong setting can cause damage instead of blessing.

4. Gifts Require Faith to Activate
Romans 12:3 tells us, “Think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.”

Not everyone has the same measure of faith—and that’s okay. But using a gift beyond our current level of faith can lead to discouragement and burnout. The more we grow in our relationship with God, the more effective our gifts become.

5. Gifts Mean Nothing Without Love
Right after Paul lists spiritual gifts in both 1 Corinthians and Romans, he immediately checks our motives: “If I speak in tongues.. have prophetic powers… understand all mysteries… but have not love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Your gift is powerful, but love is essential. If the gift doesn’t flow from love, it’s just noise.

No Spectators Allowed
This series isn’t about knowledge—it’s about activation. The church doesn’t need more consumers; it needs contributors. You weren’t saved to sit—you were saved to serve.

Let’s lay down pride, comparison, and fear. Whether you’re gifted in miracles or mercy, prophecy or practical helps, let’s remember the point – “Your Kingdom Come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

It’s not about our kingdom, our brand, or our ministry. It’s about pointing people to Jesus. Only He saves—but your gift can help bear witness to Him.
