Reflections from Tonga: A Q&A with Ps Nic Robertson
In July of 2024 Ps Matt Forman and Ps Nic Robertson visited our Missions Churches in Tonga to provide support to the teams and see first-hand the incredible work happening through City Impact Church Tonga, read on to hear from Ps Nic about his experience.
Please describe your initial impressions of Tonga.
Having been to a few of the Pacific Islands, my arrival in Tonga felt somewhat familiar yet distinct. The warm tropical climate and abundance of coconut trees were as expected, and the warm welcome from the locals was heartwarming. However, amidst the natural beauty, there was a sense of poverty and a deep longing for change that couldn’t be ignored.
What were some of the most memorable experiences or moments from your trip?
The impact that the Churches have had on the islands over the years was truly remarkable. I had the privilege of meeting people from all walks of life and getting a glimpse into how they live in Tonga.
How did the local community and church members react to the support and assistance you provided?
The Church in Tonga was greatly encouraged by our presence. They expressed feeling connected and supported by City Impact Church in New Zealand. Their gratitude was evident, and it was clear that the ongoing support from our church is making a significant difference in their lives and ministry.
Can you share any stories or testimonials from local individuals or families who were affected by your work?
While many personal stories were shared during our time in Tonga, one that stands out is a family who spoke of the hope they found through the Church. Despite facing significant financial struggles, their faith was unwavering. The love and support they received from the Church community have been a source of strength for them, and they are now actively involved in helping others.
How did the mission trip impact you personally?
I was deeply impacted by the extreme generosity of the Tongan people and the incredible work that the Church is doing. Seeing the effects of corruption was saddening, but I left with a renewed sense of hope that God will continue to use faithful people to bring revival to the Kingdom of Tonga.
What were the most significant ways in which the mission trip supported and strengthened the local church?
Our mission trip provided much-needed encouragement and support to the local church leaders. By investing in their leadership and equipping them with practical tools and spiritual encouragement, we helped to strengthen their resolve and effectiveness in ministry. The bonds that were formed during this time will continue to serve as a foundation for future collaboration and growth.
What do you wish that City Impact Church members in NZ knew/understood about the Missions work in Tonga?
I wish our members understood that the Churches in Tonga are very much part of the City Impact Church family. They are not just people we support in another country but Churches that carry the DNA and heart of City Impact Church to reach the lost and make disciples of all nations. Our support is not just financial but deeply relational, and together, we are working to see lives transformed by the love of Jesus.
