SCRIPTURE

Jesus told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” John 5:8

DEVOTIONAL - Trusting God’s Way

When reflecting on today’s reading, one thing stands out: to witness the miraculous, we must be obedient to God’s word. The man at the pool of Bethesda had been ill for a long time and must have had some degree of hope for healing; otherwise, he would not have been at the pool.

When Jesus commands him to take action, to pick up his mat and walk, the man acts on that faith and receives his healing. But when Jesus asks him the question, “Would you like to get well?” He doesn’t inquire about how, as if there were another way, but simply acknowledges that he cannot enter the pool due to his circumstances.

When we experience difficult situations, we can easily fall into the trap of blaming our circumstances or thinking that there are limited options. However, this chapter challenges us to live a life of faith and to trust in God’s word.

RESPONSE

The next time you find yourself experiencing a difficult situation or season, look to Jesus, the one from whom your help comes, and trust his direction.

PRAYER

Lord, I thank you that there are no limits to your power. I ask today that you increase my faith and help me to be obedient to your word.
