The story behind the song Unshaken has an unfortunate beginning. I was attending the funeral of a dear friend and church member who had unfortunately lost the battle to cancer. While hearing the wonderful testimonies delivered by her closest friends, I was encouraged and inspired by her unwavering faith in Jesus while going through such a difficult trial. She never stopped believing that she would be healed and never lost her joy in her Saviour. Although her battle on earth may have seemed lost, she was able to hold onto the joy knowing that whatever the outcome was, her eternal gain was greater than anything we could imagine. Her faith reminded me of Paul and Silas in the book of Acts after their imprisonment:
“Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.” Acts 16:24-25
Just as Paul and Silas remained in faith and joy during their imprisonment, my friend never lost joy and faith during her trial, and the word that kept going around my head was that she stood ‘unshaken.’
After the funeral had ended, I picked up my guitar and wrote the chorus to Unshaken.
“Nothing to fear in the battlefield, God is our hope, everlasting shield.
God we stand unshaken.
Here in a world where all hope seems lost, greater is He who resides in us.
God we stand unshaken.”
When we put our faith in Christ, we have nothing to fear in whatever battlefield we find ourselves in; when all seems lost and hopeless, we can declare that greater is He who lives in us than He who is in the world!
I hope and pray this song encourages you and our congregation as we sing it during our Sunday services.
